Pic below of the wafer I dropped in near the cave. Should I add more algae wafer now or keep it light so the 40 breeder doesn't foul? Still in with the parents so I'm wary of overdoing it.
Slate clutch from the black lace pair is a week free swimming and I did the first loose sort tonight. Pic below of the rack where the grow-out tubs are going. Culls are tiny so far, just a couple of slow ones. Anyone doing frequent small water changes on fry tubs this age or is a sponge filter and light feeding enough?
Quick update on the slate clutch. Most of the fry are off the slate and cruising the corner now, baby brine twice a day plus a little microworm this morning. Pic below of the fry corner. Losses so far are maybe a handful, which I'll take. Anyone else run microworm alongside brine this early or do you wait until week two?
Update on the slate clutch. This morning most of them let go and are hovering in the corner, so inkfin's day 5 call was spot on. Airstone on low, lights still dim, first feeding of live baby brine went in an hour ago and I can see little orange bellies already. Pic below of the tub setup I'm moving the strays into.
Update on the clutch from the other pair. Most of the wrigglers are bunched up in one tight clump on the slate and mom keeps picking up the stragglers and putting them back. Pic below of the setup. I know angels do this but it's my first time keeping this pair's fry on the slate this long. How long till you see them start wiggling off and free swimming?
Pic below of a fresh clutch from my other black lace pair, not the auction one. Eggs hatched yesterday and the wrigglers are stuck on the slate with mom and dad fanning like crazy. I usually leave them on the slate till free swimming but a couple of the eggs went white. Do you pull the dead ones with a pipette or leave the parents to clean up?
Woke up to the discus grow-out at 24C instead of 29. Heater had just quit. Swapped it, tank is back up to 27 and climbing slowly. Everyone is eating a bit shy this morning. I'm skipping the big water change today so I don't stress them more. Anyone had a drop like this and did they get sick after?
Thinking of putting one of my young bristlenose in with a plakat male in a 20 long, planted with a lot of cover. Everything I read says pleco slime coat and bettas are fine unless the betta is a fin nipper, but I'd like to hear from people who've tried it. Is it worth the risk or should I keep them separate?
Had a pair in the rack hatch a clutch on slate a few days ago and the wrigglers are still stuck on the slate tails twitching. Parents are fanning and moving them around. Pic below of a bubble nest from my betta shelf since that's what I had on hand, not the angels. Do you pull the slate to a tub or let the pair raise them till free swimming?
Well, finandfry's tip was right on time. Female laid this evening about an hour after I wrote my last thread. Pic below of the eggs on the slate right now, pair is guarding. Do you leave the tank lights off through the night or keep a dim one on so they can see the eggs? First clutch for these two so I'm nervous they'll eat them.
Most of the tub is free swimming and picking at spirulina wafer now. I crushed some flake between two spoons and it looks like dust, but I'm never sure if I'm overfeeding the tub. Following the black lace talk, my young pair has been picking at the slate again today and the female's tube looks a bit more blunt than last week. Is the blunt ovipositor a reliable sign or can it still be weeks? I'd rather not move them or touch anything and jinx it, just want to know how long to wait before I put a camera on the tank.
Watching finandfry's auction and it keeps climbing. I never see proven pairs go this high locally. What's the most you've paid for a pair that already had spawns on record, and was it worth it? My young pair still sulks so I'm tempted.
Moved the fry tub onto a gentle sponge filter yesterday after reading around here. Pic below of how it's set up, bubbles on low so the wigglers don't get blown around. Anyone else run them like this or do you prefer a bare tub with daily changes?
Finandfry's black lace auction got me thinking about my own angels. I have a young pair that keeps pairing up and then sulking, no eggs yet. Currently on flake and frozen bloodworm every other day. Do you push more live or frozen foods to get them going, or is it mostly tank size and water temp? Running 28C in a 55 with a couple of slate pieces.
