Shipping a few zoa packs to the midwest this week and the forecast there is 40s at night. Packing in a rigid cup with newspaper insulation, but I keep going back and forth on whether a heat pack is worth the risk of cooking them in a warm truck. What are you doing for shipping frags in fall, 40g pack or skip it?
My tabby now sits on the stand the minute the tank lights fade to moonlights and stares at the rasboras till bedtime. Pic below of her at it tonight. So far zero paws in the water but the lid is getting a lot of nose prints. Do you lid up completely or leave a gap with a cat around?
Moved a couple of torch frags to a new shelf in the frag rack yesterday and the heads are tucked in tight all day. Flow is a bit stronger there and I think that's most of it. Pic below of the dip bucket I use before anything goes on that shelf. Normally they open up within a day for me, how long do you give them before you start moving them again?
Did the flashlight peek after lights out like finandfry said. Counted at least a dozen fry grazing on the zucchini, bellies look round and a little orange. Pic below of the wafer I dropped in near the cave. Should I add more algae wafer now or keep it light so the 40 breeder doesn't foul? Still in with the parents so I'm wary of overdoing it.
I've got a five morph zoa pack on the trade board and keep getting offers that feel lopsided. A healed hammer head with 3 or more heads usually runs more than a 3 polyp zoa frag, but a named zoa can climb fast. How do you guys weigh these when you trade? Even value on what you'd pay retail, or do you add cash when it's not close?
Saw discusdan's nitrate thread and it got me thinking. I've got a long pothos cutting with the roots dangling into the sump of my 55, no other changes. Nitrate was 15 a couple weeks ago and I haven't tested since. Has anyone run emersed pothos or similar and logged real numbers before and after? Orange girl in the 10 gallon is at day 10 now. Eyes are dark and obvious, she's still fanning, and I've been sitting on my hands like everyone told me. Running a 75 with five grow-out discus and a decent amount of stems. Doing 50 percent changes twice a week and nitrate still sits around 20 right before the change. First time a super red bristlenose has spawned for me. Wrigglers absorbed the yolk about a week ago and they're now tiny dark commas stuck to the side of a cave in the 40 breeder. I only see them at lights out. Is that normal or should I be worried about them eating enough? Feeding crushed zucchini and a bit of algae wafer.
Tied a few golf ball portions across a flat slate piece about a month ago and it's thickening nicely, but a few strands are getting long and wispy on the edges. Pic below of the rack where it's growing out. Do you trim on a schedule or only when it starts to look messy? I've been going every two weeks with scissors and it seems fine, curious what others do.
Quick check in on the orange girl in the 10 gallon. Made it through day 8 with the eggs packed tight and I can see eyes starting to show as dark dots now. Pic below of her from across the room, no glass tapping. Lights and routine unchanged. How long from eyed eggs until you usually see shrimplets?
Slate clutch from the black lace pair is a week free swimming and I did the first loose sort tonight. Pic below of the rack where the grow-out tubs are going. Culls are tiny so far, just a couple of slow ones. Anyone doing frequent small water changes on fry tubs this age or is a sponge filter and light feeding enough?
Dropped a new piece of driftwood into the 40 breeder four days ago and it's wearing a thick white fuzz now. Pic below. The shrimp are grazing it like it's a buffet, which is the only reason I haven't pulled it. Is this just biofilm that burns off by itself or should I scrub it in the sink first? Nothing else in the tank looks off.
Moved a few of my newer locales into a different tank last week and one rhizome is going translucent at the back end, leaves still firm up front. I'm tempted to slice off the soft section but don't want to make it worse. Pic below is the tie-down setup I used, nothing too tight on the rhizome. What do you do when a rhizome starts to go soft?
Quick update from the 10 gallon. Berried orange is at day 7 and the eggs are still packed under her tail, she's been fanning them a lot. Keeping the lights and timer the same like you all said. Pic below of the tank tonight. Day 8 tomorrow, wish me luck.
