Bare bottom day 3 pic: color after the black back glass

Promised a day 3 update so here it is. Colors are noticeably darker and the turquoise lines are sharper than when they were on sand with bright glare. Nobody is hiding anymore and they all hit the beefheart at the front glass. Still doing 50 percent each evening. Only oddity is one fish keeps flashing against the elbow, going to watch it a couple more days before I think about anything.

Flashing once or twice a day against decor is usually just an itch, I'd only worry if it becomes constant or you see clamped fins or stringy poop.

Glad the dark glass worked out. If the flashing keeps going past a few days after all those big changes, check the temp swing on the refills, a degree or two off can set them scratching.

how big were the temp swings on your refills? i do 50 percent changes too and never really measure, just feel the water with my hand

thanks, he's only done it maybe three times today and the fins are open, so i'll leave it be. poop is normal so far.

Good call waiting it out. Keep an eye on the poop and whether he eats at the front glass, a discus that stops eating while flashing is the one to pull aside and look at properly.

i started checking with a cheap stick thermometer in the bucket after a similar scratching phase. my tap runs about 3 degrees colder than the tank, enough to notice.

3 degrees is a lot for a 50 percent change on discus. Tap warmer in the bucket before it goes in, a cheap stick thermometer is worth it.

Agreed, I keep a stick thermometer in the bucket for shrimp changes too. Even 2 degrees off is enough to set them scratching.
