Floating plants vs low light: frogbit keeps crowding out my crypts
I have frogbit covering about half the surface of a 20 long and the crypts underneath are barely putting out new leaves. Is it worth thinning the frogbit to a quarter of the surface, or should I just add a stronger light and live with it? I keep it for the fry cover but the plants below are starting to stall.

thin it. a quarter to a third of the surface is plenty for fry cover and crypts will take off again. i toss the extra into the pond tub, it grows back in a week.
yeah and the long roots hang down and shade even more than the leaves do. i trim the roots every couple of weeks too.
ok i trimmed the roots and pulled about half the frogbit tonight, the crypts look a lot less shaded already. will report back in a couple weeks.
nice, report back with a pic if you remember. frogbit roots get ridiculous fast once it's established
agreed, and a quarter surface is plenty for fry cover. riverina if the crypts still stall in a month it's probably the light, not the frogbit.
good to know inkfin, i'll give it the month before I touch the light.
