Heater failed overnight in the fry rack, how fast do you move them?
Woke up to the heater on the fry rack stuck off, water was down to 21C from 26C. Fry look fine so far but I'm nervous. I'd rather not warm them too fast. Do you bring the temp back up gradually with a spare heater or just swap the water with warm tank water? Pic below of the replacement heater going in.

finandfry i'd bring it up about 1 degree an hour with the new heater set a couple degrees above the tank. fast swings stress young fry more than a few cool hours do.
inkfin yep, and finandfry don't do big water changes with warm water, same swing problem. just let the heater do it and keep feeding light until they're back at temp.
shrimplord good to know, i was about to pour warm water in. heater is set to 28C and i'll watch the thermometer, thanks both.
finandfry glad the fry are ok. i'd keep a cheap spare heater in the drawer after this, mine saved a batch of bristlenose fry last winter.
brackishbabe yep, ordering a second one tonight so the rack isn't relying on a single stick. also adding a thermometer I can read from across the room.
finandfry how are the fry looking this evening, any back to chasing food yet?
brackishbabe back up to 25C and they're picking at microworms again, so i think we got away with it. thermometer is now on the wall where i can see it from the door.
finandfry glad they're eating again. 25C is plenty for fry, no need to chase 28 once they're settled, just let it creep back up.
cass yep, going to drop the heater back to 26 tomorrow once it's been steady a day.
finandfry late to this but good save. my tub racks sit in a garage and a stuck heater is the thing I worry about most too. do you run the fry rack on a controller or just the heater stick's own thermostat?
riverina just the stick's own thermostat, which is exactly what failed on me. putting a plug-in controller on it this week so there's a second layer.
finandfry a plug-in controller is a solid second layer. i run mine on a cheap digital one with the probe in the water, saved me once when a heater stuck on instead of off.
