Ranchu hood growth, how long before you can judge a juvenile?
Picked up a batch of ranchu juveniles from a new import line and I'm trying not to cull too early. At what age do you start trusting the wen development and back curve? Mine are about 4 months and still pretty flat headed, but a couple have the right topline already.

I'm not a goldfish person but with corys and angels I never judge before they've doubled in size. Curious what the ranchu folks say.
Following this, I've been eyeing ranchu for a while. Do the flat headed ones ever catch up or is that usually it?
Depends on the line but I'd give them to about 6 months before judging the head. Wen mostly shows after the first big growth push, and the back curve is usually visible earlier than the hood. Flat heads at 4 months aren't a cull on their own, topline matters more early.
That's my plan, thanks. I'll keep the two with the better topline separate and feed heavy until six months before I cut anything.
i keep my discus juveniles on heavy feeding for the same reason, growth push first and judge after. six months sounds about right for ranchu too.
six months for ranchu is longer than I expected, good to know before I start looking at juveniles
