Homemade gel food for goldfish: what binder are you using?
Been buying gel food for my ranchu and oranda tubs but the cost adds up fast. I want to switch to making my own batches. Right now I'm thinking spirulina, spinach, shrimp meal and plain unflavored gelatin, cut into cubes and frozen. Does anyone have a ratio that holds together in the water without clouding the tub? Mine fell apart on the last test.

I do something similar with my beefheart mix for the discus. About one packet of gelatin to a cup of hot water, and I blend the rest very fine before mixing. Chunky bits are what make it crumble. Let it set overnight in the fridge before you cut it.
seconding fine blending. I also add a bit of garlic and a spoon of squid or krill and the fish go after it hard. Cut small and freeze flat in a bag.
finandfry does the garlic make the water funky in the tub after a few hours? i'd worry about it with small tanks.
not if you pull what isn't eaten after ten or fifteen minutes. a little goes a long way, i use like a clove per batch.
good to know on the garlic, a clove per batch is easy. i'll try the fine blend with one packet to a cup and report back after it sets.
