Rare buce, moss and epiphytes. Everything grown submerged.
Saw discusdan's nitrate thread and it got me thinking. I've got a long pothos cutting with the roots dangling into the sump of my 55, no other changes. Nitrate was 15 a couple weeks ago and I haven't tested since. Has anyone run emersed pothos or similar and logged real numbers before and after? Pic below of the sump setup is not mine yet, still deciding where to hang it.
Tied a few golf ball portions across a flat slate piece about a month ago and it's thickening nicely, but a few strands are getting long and wispy on the edges. Pic below of the rack where it's growing out. Do you trim on a schedule or only when it starts to look messy? I've been going every two weeks with scissors and it seems fine, curious what others do.
Moved a few of my newer locales into a different tank last week and one rhizome is going translucent at the back end, leaves still firm up front. I'm tempted to slice off the soft section but don't want to make it worse. Pic below is the tie-down setup I used, nothing too tight on the rhizome. What do you do when a rhizome starts to go soft?
Pic below of the nano cube, I tied a few buce plantlets onto stones about two weeks ago with cotton thread and the thread is still visible. Some already have little white roots gripping the rock. Do you cut the thread at the first roots or wait for a month? Shrimp keep tugging at the loose ones.
Pic below of one of my females carrying a green saddle of eggs in the moss tub. I'm thinking of just leaving her and the babies in place since there's plenty of cover, but I've heard people pull the berried ones into their own tub. Do you move them or let the colony sort itself out?
Tied a golf ball of moss onto a small piece of spiderwood yesterday evening with cotton thread and by morning half of it had drifted loose in the flow. Using a hang-on filter on this 10 gallon so there's a fair bit of surface movement. Do you tie tighter, use gel super glue, or just stuff it in crevices and wait it out? Pic below of the setup I have it sitting in while I figure it out.
Bought a few emersed buce a while back and the moment I dropped them in the tank the old leaves went translucent at the edges. Water is soft, light is moderate, no CO2 on this one. Is that the normal emersed to submerged melt or should I be worried? Trying not to trim anything yet.
Attached my newest divisions to wood about ten days ago and the old leaves are starting to show that blue shimmer under moderate light. No new leaf yet though. From your experience, how long until a fresh leaf pushes after a move like this? Pic below of the wood setup is not up, I'll add one once something sprouts.

Water is clean and flow is moderate, no big algae. Pic below of the nano tank where they're sitting. Do I cut the soft part off now or leave it and see if it stops?
Tested the tap like everyone suggested. Reads about 0.5 ppm, not as bad as riverina's but not zero. Tubs are in a bright window so the algae shows up quick. Pic below of the test vial next to the tub. Do I just cut the light period, or is it worth mixing some RO in to dilute?
I've always grown my moss in straight tap water and it does fine, but a friend swears RO remineralized gives tighter growth. Pic below of two tubs side by side, same light and same trim date. Honestly I can't see much difference yet but it's only been ten days. Anyone actually run a comparison?
Got some new buce locales in from a trade and they came with a bit of algae on the rhizomes. Pic below of the pieces. I usually rinse in tank water and tie them on, but wondering if anyone does a short soak first. Don't want to carry hitchhikers into the shrimp tank.
Took the advice from the thread and cut the upper half down to about a centimeter, pic below of the wall now. Cut tips are already showing little side branches and the bare gaps are looking less obvious. Lower half I left alone as a control. Will post again in two weeks.
Mesh wall on the back of my 20 long has been going about six weeks and it's still patchy in the lower half. Pic below of where it is now. Light is moderate, no CO2, I dose a little all-in-one weekly. Is this just a patience thing or should I be tying more moss on in the gaps? Never tried a wall this size so no idea what normal looks like.
Had a patch of nana petite glued on a piece of spiderwood for about two years and this week it threw three little white spathes above the waterline. Low tech 20, moderate light, no ferts besides fish food. Anyone else get flowers on their anubias submerged or does it usually need the rhizome poking out of the water?
Trimmed some old leaves off a few of my buce rhizomes last week and now the cut ends are going brown and a little translucent. They're glued to driftwood in a low tech 20 with moderate light and nitrate around 5. I didn't touch the rhizome itself, just the leaf stems. Is this normal die back or am I headed for rot?
